History
At the Thompson Episcopal Retreat Center in St. Louis County (just west of I-270 at Ladue Road) there was an all-faith Chapel name St. David’s. When the retreat center was sold in 2003 and all the buildings were due to be demolished, Hank and Jackie Johnson, owners of Chaumette, arranged with the Bishop of the Diocese to re-locate the Chapel on the grounds of Chaumette.
It couldn’t be moved since it was a brick building built on slab, so they had is dismantled – piece by piece – and re-constructed where it is today, but as a clapboard building with a basement level. The chapel was rebuilt as accurately as possible using the same windows and doors, the flooring, the pews, altar, lectern, the wonderful Wicks pipe organ – even the red carpeting (which fit perfectly!)
In October 2003 it was re-consecrated and re-named St. Vincent’s-in-the-Vineyard as an all-faith Chapel by The Rt. Reverend Wayne Smith, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri. The starburst on the top of the cupola signifies the inclusion of all people of all faiths.
Present Day
Saint Vincent’s-in-the-Vineyard is a mission Chapel of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri celebrating Sunday services in the Episcopal tradition.
